Extreme Heavy Rain Hits Mu-an, Jeollanam-do… Man in His 60s Loses Life

Last night, torrential rain poured down, particularly in the southern region, forcing more than 1,400 residents to evacuate.

Tragically, there was a loss of life. A man in his 60s, who was struggling to support his family's livelihood amid the intense downpour that hit Mu-an, Jeollanam-do, was swept away by the strong current.

According to the Jeollanam-do Fire Headquarters and the Hampyeong Police Station, a report was received around 8:05 PM on the 3rd, stating that a man in his 60s, identified as Mr. A, was swept away by the current near a river in Hyeongyeong-myeon, Mu-an.

Mr. A was using an excavator to redirect water, trying to prevent his greenhouse from flooding due to the heavy rainfall.

As heavy rain fell all at once, he took the risk to protect his livelihood.

Witnesses and investigations revealed that Mr. A attempted to redirect the flow of water with the excavator, but it could not withstand the unexpectedly strong current and toppled over.

During this process, Mr. A was swept away by the fierce current.

His family, witnessing the scene, immediately reported the incident. Police and fire authorities quickly began a search operation.

After more than an hour of searching, Mr. A was found in a state of cardiac arrest approximately 800 meters from the accident site near the river.

Rescue teams immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and transported him to the hospital; however, he ultimately passed away.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, over 140 mm of rain was recorded in Mu-an, Jeollanam-do, the previous day.

Rainfall of over 30 mm per hour is classified as "heavy rain," while over 50 mm is classified as "very heavy rain," and this amount far exceeded those levels.

The meteorological agency forecasted that by the morning of the 5th, additional rainfall of 100 to 200 mm, with up to 250 mm in some areas, would hit the Gwangju and Jeollanam-do regions, excluding the southern coast.

In the southern coastal regions of Jeollanam-do, rainfall of 80 to 150 mm, potentially over 200 mm, is also expected. From midnight to 10 PM the previous day, cumulative rainfall reached 289.6 mm in Mu-an, 231.0 mm in Gunsan, 168.5 mm in Hampyeong, and 139.0 mm in Gwangju.

According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters, based on reports as of 11 PM the previous evening, a total of 1,044 households and 1,415 individuals temporarily evacuated from 13 cities and counties across four provinces due to the heavy rain.

The evacuation numbers by region were 1,307 in Gyeongnam, 29 in Busan, 64 in Chungnam, and 15 in Jeollanam-do.

The heavy rain warning in 13 cities and counties in Gyeongnam has been lifted, but Mil-ryang and Changnyeong remain under heavy rain warnings, while Hadong is under a heavy rain advisory.
