A man in his 60s sentenced to a fine for assaulting a police officer
A man in his 60s was brought to trial and sentenced to a fine for assaulting a police officer who was assisting him.
On the 18th, Judge Park Hyun-jin of the Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch announced that A (67) was sentenced to a fine of 6 million won for obstructing the execution of public duties.
A was charged with slapping the officer’s face twice while shouting, "What are you doing, you XX?" around 10 PM on February 22nd this year at a police station in Wonju, Gangwon Province, where the officer was helping him move outside.
According to the indictment, approximately 20 minutes before the incident, A was found lying intoxicated on a road in Wonju and was taken to the police station by officers who responded to a witness report.

Circumstances of the police assault case and the reasons for the ruling
A committed this act against the officer who was trying to transfer him to a guardian at the police station.
Judge Park stated, "Considering the nature and circumstances of the crime, including the fact that A struck the face of an officer wearing glasses strongly twice, A's acknowledgment of the offense, and the fact that the crime appears to have been impulsively committed upon waking from being heavily intoxicated, I determined the sentence."
Obstruction of public duty is a crime that punishes acts of assault or threats aimed at obstructing a public official from performing their duties, which can be punished with up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won. Especially, assaults against police officers are treated severely as they undermine the fairness and authority of law enforcement.
