Actress Shin Min-a has demonstrated her prowess as the queen of romantic comedies. tvN's "Don't Want to Lose" (written by Kim Hye-young, directed by Kim Jung-sik) has made a strong start, recording a peak 5% viewership rating for its first episode (according to Nielsen Korea), topping all channels in its time slot.
The first episode heralded the tumultuous story of Seon Hae-young (played by Shin Min-a) and Kim Ji-wook (played by Kim Young-dae). From a young age, Hae-young was more sensitive to the breakeven point than others. She craved the love of her foster mother Lee Eun-ok (played by Yoon Bok-in) and always felt that she was losing out somehow, growing up to be 'Seon Hae-young'—a name that literally means 'no loss'.
On this day, Hae-young attended the wedding of her former colleague and ex-boyfriend Ahn Woo-jae (played by Go Wook). She discovered that Woo-jae had been seeing someone else while they were still together. She set out on a mission to reclaim her congratulatory money.
Her trials didn't end there. The congratulatory money she gave to her ex could only be received back if she ever got married, and at work, she missed out on a promotion opportunity simply because she wasn't married.
Feeling despondent, Hae-young consoled herself with a solitary drinking session in front of a convenience store. Drunk and emotional, she proposed to Ji-wook, a part-timer with whom she had a love-hate relationship, asking, "Will you become my husband?"
The show captivated viewers with its relatable characters, fresh storyline, and witty direction. Shin Min-a flawlessly delivered profane and high-stakes dialogue, making the 60-minute episode fly by.
How will the story of Seon Hae-young, a woman who married to avoid losses, and Kim Ji-wook, a man who became a groom to avoid causing trouble, unfold? "Don't Want to Lose" will air its second episode at 8:50 PM on the 27th.
