Korean Man Investigated for Illegal Filming of 'Demon Slayer' in Japanese Theater

A Korean man in his 20s is under investigation by local police for allegedly illegally filming the popular animated movie 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' (hereinafter referred to as Mugen Train) at a theater in Tokyo, Japan.

According to Japanese media, including the Sankei Shimbun, the Tokyo Otsuka Police announced that they are investigating A, a Korean national residing in Tokyo, on charges of violating copyright laws.

A is accused of illegally filming the entire length of 'Mugen Train,' which lasts 2 hours and 35 minutes, using his smartphone at a theater located in Shinjuku, Tokyo on the day of the film's debut in Japan.

On the day A filmed the movie, it was the first day of 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train's' release in Japan.

Already Arrested for Credit Card Fraud

The Korean national was already in custody for other criminal charges by the Japanese police.

A was arrested on the 30th of last month for illegally using someone else's credit card to purchase approximately 200 animation Blu-ray discs worth about 1.3 million yen (approximately 12.33 million won) at a shopping mall.

While investigating the case, the police discovered the illegally filmed footage of 'Mugen Train' on A's smartphone, which had been seized.

Globally Popular Content 'Demon Slayer'

'Demon Slayer' is a manga created by Koyoharu Gotouge that was serialized in Japan's famous manga magazine 'Weekly Shōnen Jump' from 2016 to 2020.

The work has achieved over 220 million copies sold worldwide, solidifying its position as a globally popular content.

The movie 'Mugen Train' has set the record for the highest box office opening weekend in Japan, and it is anticipated to soon break the previous record set by its predecessor, 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,' released in 2020.

With its domestic release set for the 22nd, the film recorded an impressive pre-sales rate of 82.9% as of the day before its release, on the 21st, with pre-sale numbers surpassing 780,000.
