Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University requested the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to prevent the use of the Japanese Rising Sun flag in support rallies ahead of the 33rd Paris Olympics.

Professor Seo announced on the 25th that he had sent a protest email to the IOC. He began by stating, "During the Tokyo Olympics, the Rising Sun flag was seen in support during the men's cycling road race, causing controversy."
In the email, he explained, "While the Rising Sun flag has been used by Japanese people to symbolize good fishing and childbirth, it was prominently used by Japan during its invasion of various Asian countries, symbolizing militarism and imperialism."
Professor Seo elucidated, "The reuse of the Rising Sun flag is tantamount to denying the history of Japan's aggressive wars. To Asians, it is a reminder of the horrors of war."
He raised his voice against the use of the Rising Sun flag for support. "If the Rising Sun flag, used in war crimes, appears again in support during the Paris Olympics, the IOC must absolutely prevent it. We must remember the Olympic spirit," he emphasized.
Professor Seo also added examples of preventing Rising Sun flag support. "FIFA, fully aware of the history of the Rising Sun flag, immediately halted the use of the flag by Japanese supporters during the recent Qatar World Cup," he wrote.
He conveyed a message of concern. "The Rising Sun flag is being used openly in international sports events, as seen in the ongoing 'Tour de France' bicycle race across France," he pointed out.
Meanwhile, the 33rd Paris Olympics will be held in Paris, France, on the 26th. A total of 10,500 athletes from 206 countries will compete for medals. There will be 32 sports and 329 events.
