“Nonghyup Employee, Former Special Forces, in ‘Customer Home Robbery’… ‘Burdened by Debt for Training Injuries and Rare Disease Treatment’”

Special Forces Veteran's Debt Due to Medical Bills and Family Issues

The debt of Mr. A, a 30-year-old employee belonging to the Pocheon Nonghyup, who was detained and charged with robbery causing injury, was investigated to be approximately 140 million KRW.

According to police reports on the 17th, most of Mr. A's debt was borrowed from financial institutions through credit loans rather than stemming from illegal activities like gambling; it was revealed to be due to personal circumstances such as medical expenses.

Before joining Nonghyup, Mr. A served in the Army Special Forces and was discharged as a sergeant. After suffering an injury during training, he developed a rare disease accompanied by chronic pain and continued treatment with prescribed narcotic painkillers. During this process, his medical expenses skyrocketed, and personal family issues, including supporting his parents, escalated, leading him to commit the crime, according to police reports.

Breaking in through the Apartment's Exterior and Binding with Cable Ties

Police disclosed that Mr. A quickly climbed the exterior of an apartment to the third floor and entered by tearing down a screen, taking into account his background as a special forces veteran. He is alleged to have threatened an elderly couple in their 80s with a weapon during the early morning hours, bound them with cable ties, and fled with approximately 20 million KRW worth of jewelry and cash.

The Pocheon Police Agency reported that considering Mr. A's health condition, he was transferred on the 4th, five days after being arrested, on charges of robbery causing injury. No other criminal allegations related to embezzlement or his workplace at Nonghyup have been confirmed to date.

Mr. A committed the crime around 4 AM on the 28th of last month in an apartment in Eoryong-dong, Pocheon City. The victim is known to be a VIP customer who deposited a large amount of money in the local Nonghyup and had withdrawn 300 million KRW earlier this month.

Through the analysis of CCTV, police identified the suspect as a Nonghyup employee and urgently arrested Mr. A, who was working at the branch at the time. During his arrest, around 70 pieces of gold and other valuables were found in his bag, and the 20 million KRW in cash had already been deposited into his account.

Police stated, "The crime was a result of the interplay of personal debt and health issues," and added, "We will continue the investigation to protect the victim and prevent additional harm."
