“Unable to call 119 while losing consciousness”… Current uproar in mom cafes over obstetrics and gynecology maternal death incident

Another Incident of Maternal Death in Obstetrics

Recently, amid public outrage over the story of a pregnant woman who died after receiving an epidural, claims have emerged that a mother died due to the hospital's improper response after giving birth.

On the 8th, a post titled "Hello. I feel like my heart is going to burst" appeared in a Naver mom cafe, which has around 3.5 million members.

Writer A revealed that he became a 'dad' after his wife's delivery on the 4th, and shortly after, he lost her in a heart-wrenching manner.

According to A, his wife received two types of pain relief medication at six-hour intervals after being admitted to the recovery room.

"Hospital Served Meals When She Couldn't Pass Gas"

Later, while recovering and receiving the same type of pain relief, A's wife, who had not yet passed gas, began eating after being told by the hospital that "it wouldn't matter."

The issue arose on the evening of the 6th, when A's wife, who had just held their child for the first time, collapsed in the breastfeeding room due to 'hyperventilation.'

The hospital was in chaos, bringing a medical oxygen tank without any connecting parts, and when A attempted to call 119 upon realizing the seriousness of the situation, he was stopped by the hospital director.

Feeling a sense of dread, A eventually called 119, but by that time, his wife's breathing had completely stopped, although she had a faint consciousness.

Hospital Director Prevented Transfer Even After Paramedics Arrived

A recounted, "When the paramedics arrived and began CPR in preparation for transport, the out-of-touch director said, 'Where do you think you're going? You can do this here,'" adding, "The paramedics also wondered what he was thinking, as there was no equipment or facilities here to provide treatment, and they transferred my wife to the hospital."

Despite 30 minutes of continuous cardiopulmonary resuscitation, A's wife did not regain consciousness, and upon hearing the 'death notification' from the doctor, A fainted.

Emergency room doctors expressed regret over A's wife's loss of 'golden time,' stating that the intubation performed by the obstetrician was done in the esophagus, resulting in an accumulation of oxygen in the heart and lungs.

A and his family claimed that the cause of his wife's death was due to the obstetrician's incorrect 'emergency treatment' and tepid response.

Citizens expressed collective anger at A, who had to simultaneously process the birth registration of the child and the death registration of his wife.

They reacted with comments such as, "What confidence do they have to not call 119?" "This is a continuous horror," "The director is more than unqualified; he is inhuman," "It's normal not to serve food if gas hasn't come out…," and "The nonchalant attitude after such treatment is infuriating."
