Violent Crimes in Relationships Committed by Middle-Aged Men Exceed 40% in Their 40s and 50s
A recent study has shown that among perpetrators of relationship-related crimes such as stalking and domestic violence, the proportion of middle-aged men in their 40s and 50s exceeds 40%.
According to a paper published on the 10th by a research team led by Professor Jo Eun-kyung from Dongguk University’s Department of Police and Criminal Justice in the latest issue of the Korean Journal of Safety Culture, it was revealed that the percentage of middle-aged men as perpetrators of "relationship-related crimes" occurring within intimate relationships is indeed high.
The research team analyzed 5,586 cases of relationship-related crimes, including domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking, that were reported to the 112 emergency hotline from September 13 to October 11 last year across five police jurisdictions in Seoul, northern Gyeonggi, southern Gyeonggi, Incheon, and Daegu.

As a result, the age group of perpetrators of relationship-related crimes was found to be dominated by those in their 40s, with 1,218 individuals (22.5%), followed by those in their 30s at 1,128 individuals (20.8%). In their 50s, there were 1,001 individuals (18.5%), while those aged 60 and above accounted for 958 individuals (17.7%), and those in their 20s totaled 842 individuals (15.6%).
Causes and Measures for Relationship-Related Crimes
It was found that individuals in their 40s and 50s make up more than 40% of all relationship-related crime perpetrators, and when including those in their early to mid-60s, the share of middle-aged individuals reaches about half.
When analyzing perpetrators by gender, males accounted for 4,055 individuals, making up 73.2% of the total. Specifically, when focusing solely on stalking crimes, the average age of perpetrators was 43.53 years.

The increase in relationship-related crimes committed by middle-aged men is attributed to several factors, including changes in the social status of men and women, a younger physical age compared to the past, and a weakening of family bonds.
