The British band Shakatak has personally taken steps to prove that NewJeans’ "Bubble Gum" plagiarized their song.
On the 19th, Shakatak opened up on their official SNS, saying, "We appreciate the comments from Korean fans regarding the plagiarism of 'Easier Said Than Done.'"
They revealed, "The publishing company (Wise Music Group) is handling the case. They have hired a musicologist for a detailed investigation."
Lastly, they added, "We will continue to share updates regarding the plagiarism investigation." The post received mixed reactions, with comments supporting and opposing the claim.
NewJeans' "Bubble Gum" has been embroiled in suspicions of being too similar to "Easier Said Than Done" (1982). The original composer, Shakatak, claimed that the rhythm, notes, and tempo were similar, alleging plagiarism.
There were speculations that it might be a sample. However, Shakatak escalated the issue by sending a content certification to ADOR, demanding they stop using "Bubble Gum" and compensate for damages.
Last month, Wise Music Group sent a document to ADOR, HYBE, and the Korean Music Copyright Association stating that "Bubble Gum" unlawfully used "Easier Said Than Done" and violated copyright.
On the 18th, ADOR refuted, stating, "We did not use Shakatak’s composition without permission. There has been no copyright infringement. We have requested the submission of a reputable analysis report."
They added, "Previously, our legal team from the 'Bubble Gum' publisher responded to the content certification. Shakatak’s side replied that they would provide the materials, but we have not received them yet."
