Weekend Disasters and Accidents in Gangwon Province…Safety Precautions Needed

During the weekend, disasters and safety incidents occurred consecutively in the Gangwon Province, requiring caution from tourists. Particularly, awareness regarding water safety during the summer season is essential.

According to Gangwon Ilbo on the 2nd, around 11:38 AM, a man in his 20s, referred to as A, was found in a state of cardiac arrest after drowning at a beach in Cheongho-dong, Sokcho.

A was immediately transported to the hospital, and the Coast Guard reported that A had an accident while engaging in water activities and is currently investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.

Investigation of the exact circumstances is ongoing.

On the same day, around 12:09 PM, an 80-year-old tourist, referred to as B, collapsed suddenly while resting near the central square of Gyeongpo Beach in Anhyun-dong, Gangneung.

B was found in a state of cardiac arrest, but with the rapid emergency treatment provided by paramedics, he regained spontaneous circulation during transport to the hospital and is currently receiving treatment at a nearby facility.

Summer Water Safety Incident Advisory

Accidents related to water activities continued. Around 2:21 PM, a 60-year-old tourist, referred to as C, was isolated while riding a tube along the riverside at Mogokbambeol Recreation Area in Seo-myeon, Hongcheon-gun.

Fortunately, the fire authorities quickly dispatched and successfully rescued C approximately 20 minutes later, handing him over to his family.

Furthermore, around 2:59 PM, a man in his 40s got lost and became isolated near the riverbank while hiking in a mountain area close to Soyang River in Nam-myeon, Inje-gun.

The fire authorities successfully rescued the man after about an hour.

There were also traffic accidents. Around 1:56 PM, at the parking lot of Pyeongchang Rest Area on the Yangdong Expressway heading towards Gangneung, a car driven by a 70-year-old D struck a curb and a pedestrian.

As a result of this accident, three pedestrians were injured and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital; fortunately, their lives are not at risk.

According to the police, D reportedly was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and they are investigating the exact cause of the accident based on witnesses and those accompanying D.
