Special Investigation into Kim Geon-hee, Summons for Song Byeong-jun, Chairman of Com2us… Investigation into ‘200 million won sponsorship suspicion’ related to Kobanacontents

Kim Geon-hee's Allegations Under Investigation, Chairman Song Byung-jun Summoned by Special Prosecutors

The special prosecutor's team led by Min Jung-ki is intensifying the investigation into the allegations related to Kim Geon-hee.

On the 26th, the special prosecutor’s team summoned Song Byung-jun, chairman of Com2us Holdings, who is suspected of having provided millions of won in sponsorship to the exhibition planning company Kobanah Contents, operated by Kim.

Chairman Song arrived at the special prosecutor's office located in the Gwanghwamun Building West in Jongno-gu, Seoul, around 9:45 AM.

When reporters asked questions such as, "Do you know Kim Geon-hee?" and "Was there a request for sponsorship from Kim Geon-hee's side regarding the exhibition?", Chairman Song entered the special prosecutor's office without responding.

It is reported that Com2us, led by Song, provided a total of 220 million won in sponsorship to exhibitions organized by Kobanah Contents from 2015 to 2019. This period overlaps somewhat with when former President Yoon Seok-yeol served as the Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. At that time, a criminal case involving Chairman Song was dismissed as without merit by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, raising suspicions that the sponsorship may have had a quid pro quo nature.

The special prosecutor's team has expanded the investigation and conducted searches and seizures.

The prosecution had previously concluded in March 2022 that they could not confirm any specific solicitation related to this matter and decided not to prosecute. However, the Min Jung-ki special prosecutor's team has reopened the investigation after taking over the case, and it is reported that they plan to closely examine the connection between Chairman Song, former President Yoon, and Kim Geon-hee.

The special prosecutor's investigation is already underway.

On the 25th, searches were conducted at the Kobanah Contents office located in the underground shopping area of AcroVista and the headquarters of Com2us Holdings. It has been revealed that former President Yoon, Kim Geon-hee, and Chairman Song were identified as suspects in the search warrant.

The special prosecutor's team is expected to focus on uncovering whether the sponsorship for Kobanah Contents was merely an act of cultural support by a corporation or if it was a quid pro quo sponsorship for specific benefits.

Attention will be drawn to how the legal judgment regarding this matter will change depending on the results of the special prosecutor's investigation.
