Support for the People Power Party Drops to 17%… Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo Makes ‘Straight Talk’ Remarks

Hong Joon-pyo, former mayor of Daegu, criticizes the People Power Party's claims of 'oppression by the opposition'

Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo strongly criticized the People Power Party (PPP) for denouncing the seizure of the party's lawmaker's materials by the special investigation teams (Kim Geon-hee, insurrection, and Marine Corps members) as "oppression by the opposition."

He dismissed the party's claims as "hollow cries trying to cover up the sins they committed."

On the 25th, through his social media platform, Hong shared his views regarding the current situation by referring to a scenario he anticipated during the party's presidential primary in May.

He predicted at that time that if the regime transitioned to Lee Jae-myung, three situations would arise.

First, key figures close to President Yoon Suk-yeol, including his couple, would all stand in court; second, over 40 lawmakers who visited the government residence in Hannam-dong would face charges like the fast-track incident for obstruction of special public duties; and third, the PPP would be branded as a party that colludes with insurrection and is anti-democratic, facing calls for disbandment.

Calls for disbandment would occur.

Hong Joon-pyo’s predictions becoming reality… "Self-inflicted"

Referring to this, Hong emphasized, "We need to fight with all or nothing to restore the government, but the Yoon administration's supporters, led by Han Duck-soo, devised an absurd plan to regain public trust in the legitimacy of the state of emergency and ruined the party with a fraudulent primary, damaging their chances in the general election," offering a strong critique.

He warned that the current situation is "a result of the Yoon administration's supporters and the affiliated lawmakers" and expressed that "without repentance and self-reflection, it will be difficult to overcome this crisis."

Moreover, he pointed out the current state of the PPP, asking, "Is there a large umbrella in that party to shield from the torrential rain?"

According to Hong's predictions, the possibility of a disbandment ruling against the PPP is rapidly materializing. Both Democratic Party representative candidates, Jeong Cheong-rae and Park Chan-dae, have mentioned this possibility.

In the political arena, there are opinions suggesting that if the allegations related to the three special investigation teams are acknowledged, a disbandment petition against the PPP could be filed for reasons like colluding with insurrection.

Meanwhile, a national survey conducted by Embrain Public, K-Stat Research, Korea Research, and Korean Research, involving 1,001 adults from the 21st to the 23rd, indicated that the PPP's approval rating has dropped to 17%, marking a historic low.

This is the lowest approval rating since the party changed its name from the United Future Party to the People Power Party in September 2020.

The survey was conducted through telephone interviews using a virtual number (100%). The margin of error is ±3.1% at a 95% confidence level, with a response rate of 17.4%. Detailed information can be found on the website of the National Election Survey Deliberation Commission.
