“After waking up, he found that he had passed away”.. Police arrest son on charges of ‘murdering father with dementia’

A Father with Dementia Assaulted to Death, Son Sent to Prosecution in Custody

A son in his 50s, who was arrested at a funeral home for allegedly assaulting his father suffering from dementia, leading to his death, has been sent to the prosecution while in custody.

According to the Gangseo Police Station in Seoul on the 21st, a man identified as A, who is facing charges of murder of a relative, was sent to the prosecution on the 11th. A had reported to the police on the 1st at around 6:30 PM that "my father passed away while lying on the bed."

However, the autopsy results from the National Institute of Scientific Investigation indicated signs of foul play, including fractured cervical vertebrae and other assault-related injuries found on the victim's body.

Circumstances of the Incident and Investigation Process

The police focused on the fact that the only people residing with the victim at the time of the incident were A and his mother. As a result, they identified A as a prime suspect and took emergency measures to arrest him at the funeral home on the 3rd.

During police investigations, A reportedly stated that "after an argument with his father over dressing him, he drank alcohol and fell asleep, only to find his father had already passed away when he woke up."

So far, A has denied the charges, but the police conducted a custody investigation based on evidence and transferred the case to the prosecution.

This incident highlights the complex issues involving the burden on families caring for dementia patients and elder abuse, drawing social attention to the elderly care environment and family support systems.
