"Strange Smell Reported" Leads to Discovery… Over 20 Days After Death
A tragic incident has occurred in Daejeon, where a mother in her 60s and her son in his 40s were found dead together. It was only after about 20 days that their deaths became known to the world through a neighbor's report.
According to the Daejeon West Police Station on the 13th, a report was received on the 9th from an apartment management office in the Seo-gu district, stating, "There is a foul smell coming from that household." When the management office was unable to contact the residents multiple times, they forcibly opened the entrance door to the unit along with the police.
Inside the opened room, a woman in her 60s and a man in his 40s were found dead. They were related as mother and son, and the police estimate the time of death to be around mid-last month based on the degree of decomposition and CCTV footage.
Autopsy Results Show No External Injuries… Investigating Possible Suicide
The police stated that after requesting an autopsy by the National Institute of Scientific Investigation, no suspicious external injuries indicating foul play were found. It was also confirmed that there were no signs of intrusion by outsiders.
Police who arrived at the scene explained, "The door was locked from the inside, and there were no signs of abnormality on the entrance door or windows. We are investigating the circumstances of their deaths through various angles, including the possibility of suicide."
Signs of Financial Hardship Found… Notices of Power and Water Cut-Offs Discovered
Numerous letters, including urgent notices predicting power and water cut-offs, as well as various overdue bills, were found at the scene. The refrigerator inside the home was empty, and there were no significant traces of daily life.
A police official stated, "Based on the testimonies from nearby residents and the circumstances at the scene, it appears that they were in a very difficult financial situation."
