A House Buried in Bushes Where a ‘Snake’ Emerged… After 4 Years of Persuasion, 10 Tons of Waste Were Cleared, and the Door to the Heart Was Opened.

Improving the living environment of vulnerable households, collecting 10 tons of waste

Jeju City's Samyang-dong conducted a yard maintenance project targeting vulnerable households in the area.

Samyang-dong announced that it carried out the residential environment improvement work in collaboration with the Samyang-dong Community Security Council and Jeju Full Gospel Comprehensive Social Welfare Center over two days, from the 2nd to the 3rd.

The households that were maintained had been left neglected for a long time, covered in bushes to the extent that their appearance was nearly unrecognizable. The residential environment improvement project was initiated to enhance the living conditions of the vulnerable population and promote safety in the community.

Environmental improvement achieved through persistent persuasion

The residential environment of these households had been neglected for a long time, leading to the appearance of snakes and the proliferation of pests, which prompted continuous complaints from nearby residents.

Since 2020, Samyang-dong designated these households as case management targets but faced difficulties in connecting with counseling and welfare support due to the severe social withdrawal of the residents.

However, after persistent conversations and persuasion from local government and welfare agencies, the yard maintenance work was successfully implemented.

During the two-day maintenance period, a staggering 10 tons of waste was collected. This figure highlights the severity of neglect in the living environment.

A representative from Samyang-dong stated, "Although the yard that had been neglected for a long time has been cleaned, it is crucial to address the mental health of the residents concurrently," adding, "We will continue to make sustained efforts." This project is evaluated as a case that demonstrates the importance of comprehensive welfare services that consider the mental health care of vulnerable populations beyond simple environmental maintenance.
