Ahn Cheol-soo, newly appointed Chairman of the Innovation Committee of the People Power Party, diagnosed the current state of the party as being in a "coma" and announced a strong commitment to reform on the 2nd.

The four-term lawmaker from the Seongnam Bundang-gap constituency emphasized the need for party innovation through a Facebook post shortly after the announcement of his appointment as Innovation Committee Chairman, stating, "The People Power Party is currently in a coma state, just before being pronounced dead."

Ahn criticized, "This election defeat is the greatest crisis for the party," adding that the current situation within the party resembles "a terminal patient with a malignant tumor that has metastasized to the bones and marrow, who still believes in natural healing despite needing surgery."

He also pointed out, "The existence of a healthy opposition party is crucial for liberal democracy, yet we are failing to fulfill that role and are being shunned by the public."

An experienced physician, Ahn declared, "I, Ahn Cheol-soo, will wield the scalpel," emphasizing that he will thoroughly reflect on and objectively evaluate past mistakes. "I will extract the pus and abscesses that have contaminated conservative politics."

Ahn expressed his commitment to reforming the party by stating, "I will create a prescription for a normal party that resonates with the public."

Song Eon-seok, Interim Chair of the People Power Party, stated, "Ahn Cheol-soo is the perfect candidate for bold party reform."

Earlier, on the same day, Song Eon-seok held a press conference at the National Assembly to announce that Ahn Cheol-soo was appointed as the Innovation Committee Chairman.

Song noted, "We will prepare an innovative plan that drives fundamental changes in the party, and as the first step, we have invited Ahn to be our Innovation Committee Chairman."

He introduced Ahn as "someone with a background in science and engineering, experience as a physician, university professor, and CEO of an IT company, making him the ideal person for daring party reform." He also stated that he would invite various individuals from inside and outside the party to serve on the Innovation Committee to facilitate focused and rapid discussions on innovation.

In political circles, Ahn's appointment as Innovation Committee Chairman is interpreted as a strategic choice to regain the sentiment of the metropolitan area and the moderate voter base.

In fact, Ahn criticized former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s implementation of emergency measures and voted in favor of the impeachment motion against him in the National Assembly, subsequently calling for public reform within the party.

Regarding the duration of the Innovation Committee’s activities, Song Eon-seok indicated, "The party's emergency committee itself has a limited activity period until the national convention, so the Innovation Committee will also undoubtedly have time constraints."
