The national rainy season has begun… ‘Extreme heavy rain’ forecast with a maximum of 50mm per hour.

Heavy Rainfall Warnings Expanding Nationwide, 'Extreme Rain' Forecasted in Central Region

As the monsoon season officially begins, heavy rainfall warnings have been issued across various regions of the country on the 20th.

Certain areas, including Gimpo in Gyeonggi Province and Incheon, have received heavy rain alerts, while Seoul and parts of Gangwon Province are currently under heavy rain advisories.

The weather authorities have particularly warned that 'extreme rain' is expected, primarily in the central region overnight, and there is a high likelihood that the heavy rainfall warnings will expand nationwide.

This rainfall is anticipated to start affecting the central region as well as Jeolla Province and Jeju Island from the morning of the 20th, gradually spreading to North Gyeongsang and South Gyeongsang regions by afternoon, with most areas of the country expected to be impacted by the rain.

Distinct rainfall patterns by region are notably appearing, signaling the full activation of the monsoon front.

Expected Rainfall by Region and Precautions

The expected rainfall amount until the 21st is forecasted to be 50–100 mm in the metropolitan area and Chungcheong region, with some areas predicted to exceed 150 mm of heavy rain.

Gangwon Province is expected to see 10–100 mm (some places over 150 mm), Jeolla Province 30–100 mm (some places over 150 mm), and Gyeongsang regions and Jeju Island about 20–80 mm of rain.

The alarming point is that maximum concentrated rainfall of 50 mm per hour is predicted for the central region, including the metropolitan area. Such intense rain could increase the risks of urban flooding and landslides, requiring particular caution from residents in those areas.

Concentrated Rainfall

The rain is expected to gradually cease starting in the metropolitan area by the morning of the 21st, with most of the central region entering a lull in rainfall by the afternoon.

However, it is forecasted that rain may continue in the southern regions and Jeju Island until the night of the 21st.

Meanwhile, with the rainfall, the daytime temperatures in most areas of the country are expected to be around 26 degrees Celsius, somewhat lower than the average for this time of year.
