A Citizen's Injustice After Receiving a Fine for Mediating Assault on a Bus
A citizen who intervened in an assault incident between a man in his 20s and an elderly man in his 80s on a bus expressed his feelings of injustice after facing legal repercussions instead.
On the 5th, a post titled "It's an assault case, but I feel so wronged" was shared on the automobile specialized online community 'Bobae Dream.'
According to the author, Mr. A, he witnessed a confrontation between a man in his 20s and an elderly man in his 80s on a bus around this time last year. As the situation escalated from a simple argument to the young man physically assaulting the elderly man, Mr. A stated that he attempted to mediate, unexpectedly getting caught up in the fight.
In the video that Mr. A shared, the young man can be seen punching and kicking the elderly man. The elderly man, assaulted by the younger man, fell to the ground, as other passengers screamed in shock.
Mr. A claimed that as he stepped in to stop the assault, the situation turned into a physical altercation. During this process, he suffered a nasal bone fracture and received a diagnosis of three weeks of medical treatment, while the elderly man sustained injuries to his face and other areas, receiving a diagnosis of more than six weeks of treatment and hospitalization.
The problem arose when Mr. A, who attempted to mediate the young man's assault, found himself under investigation for "assault."
Mr. A expressed, "Because I grabbed (the man's) leg to break up the fight, both the elderly man and I are being charged with violating the prohibition of violence (joint assault)."
He further said, "I recognize that I made a mistake by using violence as well, but I can’t imagine what could have happened to the elderly man if I hadn’t intervened in this situation."
Ultimately, Mr. A received a summary order for a fine of 1 million won due to this incident, and it has been reported that the elderly man who was the victim of the assault also underwent questioning as a defendant.
