Professor Seo Kyung-duk from Sungshin Women's University criticized Netflix's "Super Rich Asians" for the mistranslation controversy regarding kimchi.

On the 2nd, Professor Seo posted on his SNS, saying, "'Super Rich Asians' translated 'kimchi' as 'labai cai,' which means Chinese-style spicy pickled vegetables, causing controversy."

Indeed, in episode 6 of "Super Rich Asians," the cast members were making kimchi and talking. In several Chinese subtitles, "labai cai" (辣白菜) appeared as the mistranslated term for kimchi.

Regarding this, Professor Seo said, "I learned about this issue through many netizens' reports. Given Netflix's global influence, I immediately sent a protest email."

Previously, in 2021, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism partially revised the "Guidelines on Foreign Language Translation and Notation of Public Terms." It specified the correct Chinese notation for kimchi as "xin qi" (辛奇).

Professor Seo emphasized, "Since China's 'Kimchi Project' continues incessantly, such situations could provide a pretext for China. Therefore, it needs to be corrected as soon as possible."

Lastly, he concluded by saying, "Netflix has caused many controversies regarding the notation of kimchi. As a true global company, it should pay more attention to sensitive issues of a country."
