Gyeonggi Province Introduces '1000 Won Convenience Store' Following '1000 Won Breakfast'
Gyeonggi Province is launching a convenience store for college students at just '1000 won' to reduce their economic burden.
On the 9th, Gyeonggi Province signed a business agreement with NH NongHyup Bank Gyeonggi Headquarters, the Gyeonggi Province Social Welfare Council, the Gyeonggi Community Chest of Korea, Gachon University, and Pyeongtaek University to operate the '1000 Won Convenience Store for College Students.'

In accordance with the agreement, the six organizations will work to open the 1000 won convenience store at Gachon University and Pyeongtaek University in the second half of this year.
The 1000 won convenience store aims to alleviate the living expenses burden on college students and realize social value by linking local resources. The products will be sold in bundles of 3 to 5 items at more than 90% discount compared to market prices.
The '1000 Won Convenience Store' is operated with donations from NH NongHyup Bank Gyeonggi Headquarters.
The budget necessary for the project will be funded by donations from NH NongHyup Bank Gyeonggi Headquarters, while student governance bodies, such as the student council, will manage planning and operations.
The store’s offerings will be determined based on a prior preference survey conducted among the students of the respective schools.
Main products are expected to include food items such as instant rice, canned tuna, and seasoned seaweed, along with daily necessities like shampoo and cleansing foam. Access to the convenience store will require authentication procedures, such as tagging a student ID from the respective school.

Previously, Gyeonggi Province launched the '1000 Won Breakfast Program' in 2023, with 33 universities in the province participating.
The 1000 Won Breakfast Program allows college students to have breakfast for just 1000 won at school cafeterias. For each student, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs provides 2000 won, while Gyeonggi Province contributes 1000 won, with the remainder covered by the universities.
Go Young-in, the Deputy Governor of Economic Affairs for Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The 1000 won convenience store is a first attempt to transcend simple welfare initiatives and realize social value by connecting local resources on university campuses. It holds great significance as a space for student-led solidarity and cooperation."
