President Lee Jae-myung Decides to Attend G7 Summit… Possibility of Meeting with Trump

President Lee Jae-myung has decided to attend the G7 summit being held in Canada.

On the 7th, the spokesperson for the president's office, Kang Yu-jeong, announced during a briefing at the Yongsan presidential office that "President Lee has been invited to the G7 summit and has decided to attend."

This year, Canada, the chair of the G7, has already invited South Korea to the summit. This meeting is noteworthy as it marks the first participation of the Lee Jae-myung administration in a multilateral summit on the international diplomatic stage.

In particular, there is a high possibility that a South Korea-U.S. summit with President Donald Trump will take place at this G7, which is expected to be an important opportunity to gauge the future direction of the bilateral relationship.

Earlier, on the 6th, President Lee Jae-myung held his first phone call with President Trump, promising to work towards reaching a satisfactory agreement for both countries regarding tariff negotiations as soon as possible.

As tariff issues have emerged as a major concern in recent South Korea-U.S. relations, direct communication between the two leaders is seen as a significant step forward.

During the call, President Trump invited President Lee to the United States and agreed to meet as soon as possible through opportunities such as multilateral meetings or bilateral visits. This is interpreted as a positive signal for establishing a cooperative relationship between the newly inaugurated Lee Jae-myung administration and the Trump administration's second term.

Meanwhile, spokesperson Kang Yu-jeong stated, "The Lee Jae-myung administration will restore the exclusive aircraft for the Republic of Korea, which was significantly reduced under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration," and added, "We plan to restore the number of journalists boarding the presidential exclusive aircraft to the level during the Moon Jae-in administration." This decision reflects a differentiated media policy from the previous administration and is expected to improve the coverage environment for the president's overseas trips.

Attending the G7 summit is expected to be President Lee Jae-myung's first major multilateral diplomatic stage and is anticipated to be an opportunity to showcase South Korea's international status and diplomatic capabilities.
