Democratic Party files complaint against Kim Moon-soo for ‘defamation of false facts’… “Malicious offensive ahead of the election”

"Delay in Lee Jae-myung's trial and remarks on North Korean remittances are all false… Malicious offensive ahead of the election"

The Democratic Party of Korea announced that it will file a complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency against Kim Mun-soo, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, for violating the Public Official Election Act. The accusation is for disseminating false information with the intent to defeat his opponent.

On the 25th, the Democratic Party's Election Countermeasure Committee, along with the Clean Election Legal Support Team and the Fake News Response Team, issued a joint statement explaining the basis for the complaint, stating, "Candidate Kim has repeatedly spread false information, including recent remarks that 'Candidate Lee Jae-myung is delaying the trial proceedings with tricks.'"

"No basis for trial delay… Remarks on North Korean remittances and Seomun Market campaign are also false"

The Democratic Party pointed out that Kim's claims are not true. They stated, "Candidate Lee Jae-myung has not intentionally delayed the trial, and on December 17 of last year, Choi Dae-yeop, the Director of the Supreme Court Administrative Office, responded that 'it is not easy to assess that the trial is being delayed.'"

The Democratic Party also took issue with comments made by Kim regarding North Korean remittances during the Kwanhun Debate on the 10th. Kim claimed that "Former Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young carried out illegal remittances to North Korea under the instructions of then-Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung," but the Democratic Party labeled this a "distortion contrary to the facts."

The Democratic Party rebutted, "This case is limited to violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, and the court has not even judged whether Candidate Lee Jae-myung was involved."

Additionally, they asserted that Kim's statements during a campaign rally at Seomun Market in Daegu on May 12, claiming that "Candidate Lee Jae-myung allowed impersonation related to the Daejang-dong incident and made false statements," were also inaccuracies. The Democratic Party argued, "Publicly disseminating unverified rumors as if they are true by a major party's presidential candidate at an official rally is a very serious matter."

"Clear illegal act targeting the opposing candidate ahead of the election"

The Democratic Party stressed, "A series of remarks by Candidate Kim constitute a false declaration of facts aimed at defeating this candidate, directly violating Article 250, Clause 2 of the Public Official Election Act."

They continued, "Such illegal acts at such a serious time, just days before the presidential election, seriously undermine the fairness of the election," and they strongly urged the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency to accept their complaint and conduct a swift and thorough investigation.
