Lee Jae-myung pays respect and praise to retired Hong Joon-pyo… “Let’s share a glass of makgeolli when you return from the U.S.”

Lee Jae-myung Sends 'Unprecedented Praise' to Hong Joon-pyo

Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed a message of respect and regret to former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, who announced his retirement from politics after failing to secure candidacy in the People Power Party's primary and departed for Hawaii, USA.

This is an unusual praise sent to a 'romantic politician' who graced a certain era, regardless of political ideology and affiliation.

On the 12th, Lee posted on his Facebook with the title "Remembering the Romantic Politician Hong Joon-pyo" and wrote, "Although Senior Hong was on the opposing side, he was not an unpleasant person." He added, "As a true politician who did not forget the spirit of humor, wit, and unity, he was loved by many."

"If fair competition had been possible…"

Lee particularly confessed, "The most burdensome opponent in this presidential election for me was a seasoned politician like Senior Hong Joon-pyo," stating, "If I could have faced him in a match, I hoped Korean politics could have escaped excessive judicialization and allowed fair competition."

In light of recent evaluations that the political arena is mired in the swamp of 'judicial risk' entangled in lawsuits and investigations ahead of the recent presidential election, he evaluated that former Mayor Hong truly represented a different flow characterized by 'directness and acceptance in politics.'

'Deeply Relates to the Dream of a Left-Right Unified Government'

Lee also placed significance on Hong's consistent emphasis on the 'Vision for the Seventh Republic' until the end.

He stated, "I deeply resonate with the idea of overcoming crises and moving forward as a left-right unified government," and added, "Regulatory innovation for becoming a leading country in advanced industries, expanding investment in cutting-edge technology, and the introduction of a conscription system are indeed necessary policies."

He continued, "Ideology or faction cannot take precedence over national interests and the happiness of the people," and encouraged, "Regardless of which party you supported or who you voted for, let us unite our strength for the future of the Republic of Korea."

At the end of the post, a warm human touch was conveyed. Lee expressed, "Have a safe trip to the U.S. When you return, let’s share a glass of makgeolli," promising a meeting over a traditional drink.
