Teenage Woman Murderer Park Dae-sung Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Appeal Court
Park Dae-sung (31), who murdered a teenage woman he did not know, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the appeal court, reaffirming that he should be permanently isolated from society.
The Criminal Division 1 of the Gwangju High Court sentenced Park Dae-sung to life imprisonment, the same as the original sentence, on the charges of murder on the 1st.
The court stated, "This is a 'random killing' that fits the extreme disregard for human life. Unfortunately, there are murder cases happening across the country, but it seems that there is no incident that has raised national outrage like this case."
In a letter of remorse, Park Dae-sung wrote, "I think about how much the victim, who was stabbed with a weapon, must have suffered at such a young age. I feel an overwhelming sense of regret. Although it is too late, I am still deeply remorseful. I sincerely apologize to the victim and the bereaved family for leaving painful memories and scars."
The prosecution sought the death penalty, but the court did not accept this.
The court explained, "In cases where the death penalty has been confirmed previously, there were multiple deceased victims, and the crimes were planned meticulously or involved serious crimes such as robbery." It added, "This case does not seem to have a meticulous plan."
Moreover, the court mentioned, "Considering that life imprisonment can be subject to parole, we believe it is possible to achieve the purpose and effect of life imprisonment by strictly examining and limiting parole to permanently isolate the criminal from society and deprive them of freedom."
On this day, Park Dae-sung appeared in court wearing a brown prison uniform and kept his head down throughout the proceedings.
Family members of the victim, sitting in the gallery, expressed their outrage when Park Dae-sung entered the courtroom looking heavier than when his personal information was disclosed last year.
The grieving family could not bear to watch the entire sentencing hearing and left the court with support.
