Every time a car passes by, it shakes… Is there a sinkhole precursor in the middle of Jeonju road? (Video)

Signs of Sinkholes on Jeonju Roads Heighten Residents' Anxiety

On a street corner of Yuyeon-ro in Hyoja-dong, Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, the road surface has become uneven, causing vehicles to bounce while driving. Drivers passing through this area are expressing discomfort and concerns about the potential for sinkholes.

The recent occurrences of sinkhole incidents nationwide have further amplified residents' anxieties.

At around 11 a.m. on the 29th, vehicles were observed driving along a stretch where about 18 meters in length and 10 meters in width of the road had sunk in a wave-like shape. As a result, cars were seen swaying or abruptly changing lanes while passing.

Mr. Lee, a commuter who travels this route every day, stated, "The road has been bouncing for a few years, but the severity has increased recently." He added, "Hearing about sinkhole incidents makes me even more scared."

Experts have indeed warned that such road conditions are similar to precursors of sinkholes.

Last year, a similar phenomenon occurred in Yeonhui-dong, Seoul, which led to a large sinkhole. In response, the Wansan District Office of Jeonju plans to inspect the site and take necessary measures to resolve the issue.

A representative from the construction department of the Wansan District Office commented, "It could be an issue with the road surface, but we will first check the sewerage pipes."

In North Jeolla Province, a total of 75 subsidence incidents have occurred from 2019 until April this year, with 34 of these cases taking place in Jeonju. Under these circumstances, local residents remain unable to shake off their safety concerns.
