“Even AI Can’t Distinguish”… Popular Band ‘Lucy’ Faces Plagiarism Allegations from Japanese Singer’s Song

Boy Band Lucy Accused of Plagiarizing Japanese Artist

The popular band Lucy, known for taking on the entire process from composition to lyrics and performance, has come under suspicion for plagiarizing J-POP.

Since the 27th, opinions have surfaced in online communities claiming that parts of Lucy's new song bear similarities to tracks by a famous Japanese artist.

The suspicion revolves around a section of the song "Hama," from Lucy's mini-album "Wajangchang," released on the 23rd, which is said to resemble "Last Dance" (released in 2019) by the well-known Japanese artist Eve.

The song was composed by Jo Won-sang, who serves as the bassist and producer for Lucy.

In this regard, one netizen claimed that when they played the controversial part of "Hama" to "Google Song Search," it identified it as Eve's "Last Dance." It was also noted that AI could not differentiate between Lucy's song and Eve's track.

Additionally, there were criticisms that the music video for "Motnani," another track from the same album, allegedly copied characters from Eve's "Insomnia" music video, with a matching scar under the eye. There are analyses indicating that the overall concept and setting of the MV are quite similar.

Following this, opinions emerged stating that "Matne," released by Lucy in 2021, bears resemblance to "Itte" by Yorushika, a dominant player in the domestic J-POP digital music scene.

Some netizens even claimed on social media that "Opening," a song famous for signaling the start of Lucy's performances, is similar to the opening song of the Japanese anime "Chrono Crusade."

Moreover, suspicions of plagiarism have also arisen regarding Lucy's beloved tracks "Hero," "Ending," and "Busy."

Meanwhile, Lucy is currently soaring high after their first headliner stage at the "Grand Mint Festival 2023."

Shin Kwang-il, who serves as the drummer and lead vocalist for Lucy, has been fulfilling his military duty in the Army Band since September of last year.
