“Senior Drivers”… Seoul City Produces and Distributes 4,600 Stickers for Elderly Drivers

Seoul City Distributes 4,600 'Senior Driver' Signs for Elderly Drivers

Seoul City announced that it will produce and distribute 4,600 'Senior Driver' signs to prevent traffic accidents involving drivers aged 65 and older and to promote a considerate driving culture.

This sign is a system introduced by the amendment of the Road Traffic Act in 2023, which helps elderly drivers to inform other drivers that they are currently driving.

Seoul City plans to distribute these signs through campaigns, traffic safety education visits, and SNS events in May, which is designated as Family Month.

According to Seoul City, the number of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers in 2024 is projected to reach 7,236, an increase of 5.6% compared to the previous year, with fatalities surging by an astonishing 57.1%.

In response to this situation, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is implementing various educational programs, including experience-based drunk and drug driving education for elderly drivers, guidance on voluntarily returning their driver's licenses, and promoting the signs.

Additionally, Seoul City provides a traffic card with a balance of 200,000 won to citizens aged 70 and older who voluntarily return their driver's licenses.

As of last year, a total of 24,416 elderly drivers in Seoul returned their licenses, resulting in a higher return rate compared to the national average.
