A man in his 30s, who extorted over 100 million won from a friend's mother by lying that his friend was injured, is facing legal consequences.
The Chuncheon District Court's criminal division 2 Chief Judge Kim Taek-seong sentenced Mr. A (36) to 2 years in prison for charges of fraud and attempted fraud.

From August 2021, Mr. A began calling the mother of his friend, Ms. C, telling her that "B got injured and needs treatment fees," initially receiving 2 million won. By March 2022, he had allegedly extorted a total of approximately 115 million won over 33 occasions.
Mr. A deceived Ms. C with various lies beyond simple requests for treatment fees, such as claiming "B was in a car accident and needs settlement money" and "B couldn't repay his loans, and creditors have come looking for him." However, his criminal activities did not end there.

In April 2022, he demanded a large sum again, claiming "B had stolen 53 million won from a bag," but this raised suspicion in Ms. C, leading her to refuse and ultimately exposing his crimes.
Chief Judge Kim stated, "Considering the substantial amount of damage inflicted and the fact that recovery for the victim has yet to occur, I determined the sentence."
