Police Stop Fleeing Drunk Driver by Intentionally Colliding with Vehicle

Moments have been captured where police intentionally collided with a vehicle fleeing in a drunken state in Daejeon’s Dong-gu Panam-dong.

The incident occurred around 1:10 AM on the 10th of last month. At that time, Officer Song Jun-ho and Officer Kim Seon were in hiding after receiving a report of a suspected drunk driver. Upon spotting the problematic vehicle coming out of an alley, the two police officers immediately began to give chase.

A video uploaded on the 22nd by the National Police Agency on YouTube shows the suspected drunk vehicle rapidly accelerating right after passing by the patrol car.

Officer Kim stated, “I heard the RPM increasing,” and he added, “When I rolled down the window and ordered him to stop, he signaled that he understood.” However, the driver began to flee at a speed of 100 km/h, dangerously speeding through narrow alleyways at 80-90 km/h.

The driver attempted to run reckless through an 8-lane intersection, disregarding vehicles in the opposite lane. Officer Song recalled, “Considering our speed, it seemed like he was at least driving at 130-140 km/h.” Eventually, the police opted to collide with the vehicle from behind to reduce its speed.

Even after the first impact, the driver did not stop and entered a parking lot. However, with no further escape routes available, he attempted to go over a parking barrier. At this moment, the two police officers made another impact, bringing the vehicle to a halt.

Officer Song explained, “Even after entering the parking lot, he tried to swerve and escape, so we had no choice but to make a second impact to completely immobilize the vehicle.” Officer Kim added, “There was obviously a strong smell of alcohol on him,” saying, “He even got out without wearing slippers.”

The breathalyzer test revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.119%, which is at a level that would lead to license cancellation. He reportedly stated during the police investigation, “It was my first time receiving a stop order and being chased, so I was scared and kept fleeing.”

Officer Song remarked, “The authority and equipment given to us for our duties should be used appropriately, otherwise they become useless.” He further stated, “It was definitely worth doing so, which is why I think I made the collision with the patrol car without hesitation.”

Thanks to the rapid response of the police, there are evaluations that a major accident was prevented. Experts emphasize that quick judgment and action in such situations play a significant role in ensuring public safety.
