“Caged and Drowned a Cat”… Shocking Animal Cruelty Incident in Gwangyang Mudflats, South Jeolla Province

Cat's body found trapped in a capture trap in Gwangyang city tidal flat, suspected of intentional drowning

A cat's body, presumed to have drowned while trapped in a capture trap, has been found one after another, igniting public outrage.

According to the animal protection organization KARA on the 23rd, a cat's body, swollen and decayed from being submerged in water, was found around noon on the 22nd in the tidal flat in front of Myungdang Park in Taedong, Gwangyang city, Jeollanam-do.

The cat was discovered dead inside a capture trap that contained a can of cat food.

It is presumed that someone lured the cat with food and intentionally left the capture trap in the tidal flat, leading to its drowning.

KARA explained, "The tidal flat area is a place where water from the Seomjin River flows into the South Sea, allowing boats to enter." It seems someone has cruelly utilized such geographical features to kill the cat.

Repeated discovery of cat bodies in the same area suggests the possibility of similar crimes

In particular, cat bodies have been continuously found in the area.

On the 20th, a yellow-patterned cat and a chaos-patterned cat were discovered dead in the same Myungdang Park.

According to a report, the yellow-patterned cat appeared unusually heavy, as if it were filled with water, while the chaos-patterned cat was in a severely decayed state, with only bones and skin remaining.

KARA stated, "Given the locations and conditions in which the cats were found, we speculate that they may have been killed using the same method."

Currently, KARA has reported the incident to the Gwangyang Police Station, accusing the perpetrator of violating the Animal Protection Act.

Under the current Animal Protection Act, those who cause animals to suffer and lead them to death can face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million KRW.

KARA urged, "If anyone has witnessed someone carrying capture traps in the Myungdang Park area, please contact us. Additionally, if you have seen similar incidents anywhere in Gwangyang city, we would appreciate your reports."

Meanwhile, there is increasing social concern as incidents of cat abuse have risen nationwide in recent years.

Animal protection organizations emphasize the need for stricter punishment for animal abuse, along with education promoting respect for life.
