“Drinking and Driving While Fleeing, ‘Drunk Riding’, Will Be Punished Starting June”

Seoul Police Agency Announces Strengthened Punishment for 'Drunk Driving'

On the 23rd, the Seoul Police Agency announced that starting from June 4, following the revised Road Traffic Act, they will strengthen the punishment for the method known as 'drunk driving,' where individuals flee after an accident and drink more alcohol to evade breathalyzer tests.

If this method obstructs the police's breath alcohol measurement, the offender may face imprisonment of more than 1 year and up to 5 years, or a fine of more than 5 million won and up to 20 million won.

The police are applying a 'zero tolerance principle' for drunk driving, and particularly stated that they will prioritize the confiscation of vehicles and arrest investigations for drivers who have been caught driving under the influence four or more times in the past five years or those who cause serious accidents resulting in fatalities.

Last year alone, the Seoul Police seized 41 habitual drunk driving vehicles, and they are taking strong measures, including seizing vehicles of drunk drivers who fled the scene of an accident recently.

As the social damage caused by drunk driving has become severe, the government and police are strengthening relevant regulations and continuously conducting crackdowns.

Experts expect these measures will contribute to reducing drunk driving, emphasizing the need for active cooperation and awareness from citizens.
