“Too Itchy” Scabies Outbreak at Samyook University Dormitory … 2 Students Infected and Sent Home

Seoul's Sangmyung University Dormitory Reports Outbreak of Contagious Skin Disease 'Scabies'

At the boys' dormitory of Sangmyung University in Nowon District, a contagious skin disease known as 'scabies' has been reported, prompting the school to take urgent measures.

Scabies is a condition caused by an allergic reaction to the waste of mites, leading to red rashes and severe itching.

According to Sangmyung University, on the 10th, two students residing on the 5th floor of the Zion Hall were confirmed to be infected with scabies.

The school immediately sent the affected students home and disinfected the entire building the following day. They also notified dormitory residents about the outbreak and requested those living on the 5th floor to refrain from visiting the lower floors.

Dormitory residents were encouraged to study within the dormitory instead of going to the library.

Scabies mites burrow into the skin's stratum corneum, causing allergic reactions through secretions that lead to intense itching. Symptoms typically appear after a latent period of 4 to 6 weeks and can be transmitted through contact with infected individuals.

On the 15th, a student from the girls' dormitory, Eden Hall, also complained of itching; however, medical examination confirmed it was not scabies. Nonetheless, the university disinfected Eden Hall as a precaution.

A representative from Sangmyung University stated, "There have been no additional infections so far, but we are closely monitoring the situation considering the latent period." This incident highlights the importance of managing contagious diseases within universities, particularly emphasizing the need for thorough hygiene practices in densely populated living environments such as dormitories.

Scabies is treatable, but early detection and prompt action are crucial. Therefore, the school is advising students on personal hygiene management and care, while also considering additional preventive measures.
