A tragic incident occurred at a futsal field in a park in Sejong City, where an 11-year-old elementary school student died after hitting his head against a soccer goalpost.

According to the Sejong Fire Department, a report was received at 3:55 PM on the 14th indicating that "a child is lying on the ground and bleeding from the head" at a futsal field in a neighborhood park in Goeun-dong, Sejong City.

When the emergency response team arrived at the scene, the child was already in a state of cardiac arrest. The paramedics immediately provided emergency treatment and transported the child to a nearby hospital; however, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The accident reportedly happened while the deceased child and his friends were playing near the soccer goalpost, which fell forward, leading to the tragic incident. It is believed that the strong impact to the head from the falling goalpost resulted in fatal injuries.

The police are closely investigating the circumstances of the accident based on witness statements and a site inspection.

Inspection of Safety Facilities at Futsal Fields Underway

Additionally, an inspection of the safety facilities at the futsal field is being conducted to determine whether the goalpost was properly secured and if safety checks had been adequately performed.

Meanwhile, similar incidents have been occurring continuously both domestically and internationally. In the United States alone, over 200 goalpost-related injuries are reported each year, some of which result in fatal outcomes.

As a result, many countries are moving to strengthen the stability standards for goalposts. Following this incident, there is likely to be an increase in calls for enhanced safety inspections of public sports facilities in South Korea.
