Netflix is facing controversy for incorrectly translating Japanese karate as taekwondo. Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University stated on Instagram on the 19th, “In the Korean dubbing of the first episode of ‘Little Angel’ season 4, Netflix translated Japanese karate as taekwondo.”
He added, “This is a popular animation among children. There is a risk they might confuse karate with taekwondo,” emphasizing that “Netflix must make the correct amendments.” This is not Netflix’s first mistake. In June, during the opening of ‘The Eighth Sense’, the East Sea was translated as the Sea of Japan in the Spanish subtitles, which also caused controversy.
Professor Seo pointed out, “Netflix has previously provoked public outrage by labeling kimchi as paocai in several Chinese subtitle services.” He concluded that “greater caution is needed in translation regarding sensitive issues of a country,” and stressed that “as a global company, it is important not to neglect the responsibility of providing accurate information.”
