
British actress Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89.
On the 27th (Korean time), the BBC announced, "Maggie Smith peacefully closed her eyes at the hospital this morning. Family and friends were with her in her final moments."
They added, "The bereaved family is currently mourning the loss of Maggie Smith. It is a sad day for everyone. Please respect their privacy."
Maggie Smith is considered a legendary British actress. She began her acting career in theater in the 1950s and had a vibrant career in both British and American theater and film for over 70 years.
She won two Academy Awards, one for her role in 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' (Best Actress) and the other for 'California Suite' (Best Supporting Actress). She also won four Emmy Awards and a Tony Award.
She was loved as Professor McGonagall in the 'Harry Potter' series, known for her strict demeanor as the head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts, but also showing a warm side to her students.
She married actor Robert Stephens and had two sons (Toby Stephens, Chris Larkin). After their divorce, she remarried playwright Beverley Cross, who later passed away.
