'BLACKPINK' Jennie addressed the indoor smoking controversy in an interview with an American media outlet. She showed a calm demeanor, stating that she fully understands Korean public's criticism.
American fashion magazine 'Harper's Bazaar' unveiled Jennie's August issue photoshoot on the 19th (local time). They also had an honest interview with her.
During the conversation, Harper's Bazaar mentioned, "Privacy is a luxury for BLACKPINK. Even the smallest action by a member can become controversial," referring to the e-cigarette indoor smoking issue.
Jennie explained the situation: "What should I do? If Korean people think it's wrong, I need to correct that behavior."
She emphasized the need to see things from fans' perspectives. "I understand why (the Korean public) is angry," she added. "It's a cultural and historical issue. We can't go against that."
Jennie released a YouTube vlog in July. It showed her going through her schedule in Capri, Italy. Jennie was criticized for exhaling e-cigarette smoke while getting her makeup done.
Jennie immediately issued an apology. She also directly contacted the on-site staff to seek forgiveness. However, the reaction overseas was different. Many felt the standards were too harsh for idols.
The BBC reported, "Korea applies strict moral standards to celebrities. No mistakes are tolerated," pointing out that Jennie's international fans are more lenient.
Meanwhile, Jennie also discussed her solo album in the 'Harper's Bazaar' interview. She hinted that the new solo album would be released through 'Odd Atelier.'
The new album is mainly recorded in English and will include various genres. It is reported to contain messages that inspire young women.
