Pedestrian Death in Jaywalking Incident: Driver Fined 10 Million Won
A driver in his 50s, who struck and killed a pedestrian jaywalking across the street, has been sentenced to a fine in the first trial.

On the 11th, the Ulsan District Court’s Criminal Division 5 (Chief Judge Jo Gook-in) announced that it had sentenced driver A to a fine of 10 million won for violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Processing for failing to avoid a jaywalking pedestrian.
Mr. A had been driving his vehicle in Ulsan last April at night when he collided with Mr. B, a pedestrian in his 60s, who was jaywalking across the road.
Immediately after the accident, Mr. B was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The court acknowledged A's negligence, stating in its ruling, "At the time of the accident, it was dark, and there was a crosswalk nearby, so the driver should have been vigilant in looking ahead and to the sides."
However, it also explained the reasons for sentencing, noting, "We considered that A had reached a settlement with the bereaved family, and that the victim, who was jaywalking, also had considerable negligence."
The victim, who was jaywalking, also had considerable negligence.
