60-Year-Old Man Kills Son with a Shotgun… “Possibility of Revenge Against Ex-Wife May Have Been a Factor”

Experts say, "The 60-year-old man who killed his son may have acted out of revenge against his ex-wife."

In connection with the incident in which a man in his 60s shot and killed his son in his 30s with a homemade firearm in an apartment in Incheon, the possibility has been raised that a sense of revenge against his divorced ex-wife was a motive for the crime.

On the 22nd, Professor Oh Yun-seong from the Department of Police Administration at Soonchunhyang University analyzed the psychological background of this incident during an appearance on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show.'

Professor Oh stated, "The love for a child is an unconditional instinct, and many find it puzzling that this instinct was violated."

He particularly noted that the perpetrator resided in an apartment registered under his ex-wife's name, which he explained means that there had not been a complete emotional and economic separation from her. Professor Oh emphasized this point again regarding the perpetrator's living situation in his ex-wife's apartment, which they divorced 20 years ago.

The murdered son was reportedly holding a position at a company operated by his mother.

Professor Oh suggested that "the son likely had more frequent contact with his mother than with his father," proposing that this situation could have caused complex psychological conflicts.

He analyzed, "The fact that he received economic support for 20 years as a father or husband may have caused a significant sense of deprivation."

He added, "The existence of the son symbolizes the symbolic heir to the social and economic success achieved by the ex-wife."

From the husband’s perspective, feelings of powerlessness, inferiority, anger, and jealousy could have combined to lead to frustration and a desire for revenge, according to Professor Oh’s view.

He expressed that the dramatic manner in which he expressed these feelings to the world on the most dramatic day, his own birthday, when his son had invited him, is significant.

Professor Oh remarked that there is a term for the act of killing children out of vengeful feelings toward a spouse, and he wondered, "Could this not be due to an intention or psychological background aimed at inflicting pain for the loss of the son?"
